Why is that moped on Craigslist so inexpensive? After the law changed this year, we are seeing “discounted” mopeds showing up with new owners. Help us get the word out about mopeds in NORTH CAROLINA!
As the new statutes came into effect, mopeds are getting sold to drivers who are unaware of the new rules. The reason for the drop in prices for used mopeds is because mopeds are now required to carry insurance and be registered with the state of North Carolina.
Help us get the word out!
***In July 2015, mopeds were required to get a license plate.
***As of July 1, 2016, moped drivers are required to carry liability insurance for their moped!
If you are thinking of purchasing a moped, please call Anders, Ireland & Marshall Inc. to quote coverage for you. Liability coverage is fairly inexpensive for a moped and mopeds are a great way to save on gas. For an experienced, licensed driver rates are as low as a hundred dollars a year for liability coverage.
For many years, it was well known in North Carolina that mopeds did not require a valid driver’s license or insurance to operate. A client purchasing a moped thru private sale may not be aware of the change in law. Liability insurance does not cover damage to the moped. Liability insurance is for the other party when the moped driver causes the accident. North Carolina does not require moped owners to have a driver’s license, only an identification card to register the vehicle. Insurance can be purchased with an identification card (the minimum age to legally operate a moped is 16 – GS 20-10.1 ).
If you see a friend with a recently acquired moped – please remind the owner about the new statutes! And if your child is asking for a new “toy” – be sure to insure the moped the same as you would insure a motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle. Call us today to quote coverage for your MOPED, golf cart, ATV, snow mobile, or motorcycle at 919-755-1401.
